Keith Haring in Berlin

This is a photograph I took of a photograph in an outdoor exhibition  near the Berlin wall. It shows the great Keith Haring doing his thing  on the Berlin Wall.

What it does not tell you is that he painted over  the street art of some other chaps who had been invited by the Wall Museum, along with Haring, to create works on the wall. Thierry Noir  and Christoph Boucher's 42 statues of Liberty ( you can make out the faint outlines in the pic) were all whitewashed and Haring then painted over them! Haring was not in the know until  Thierry Noir turned up and asked what the hell was going on. The wall  had been primed the day before by the staff of the museum. Apparently  footage exists of the confrontation between Keith and Thierry!

Masturbating Hitler and other questions about Tommy Weissbecker Haus, Berlin.

Last year I went to see a band in Berlin. And whilst walking around in Kreuzberg, I spotted this amazing mural on this four storey squat. Named in honour of a Baader Meinhof gang member who died in a police shoot out, this place has been a squat since the 1970s. It was first used by a commercial company to house migrant workers. It then got occupied by homeless people. You can get a flavour of the fascinating history here. What I want to know is

  • How long has this mural been up there?
  • Who was/were the artists behind it?
  • What the hell is the masturbating military figure - Hitler? - all about?
  • How come it never changes?
  • How often is it maintained?
